Comparable effort (effort units)Enter comparable effort in effort units. Use the measurement basis described below.

Understanding your result

Use the result to discuss assumptions and test how rankings change when confidence or effort changes. Keep must-do dependencies outside a purely score-based ranking.

Common mistakes

  • A subjective confidence weight is not a p-value.
  • A project omitted from an effort estimate can make the score look better without improving its value.

Check your calculation

  • Use the worked example as a known reference case, then change one input at a time and check the direction and units of the response.

Choose a consistent measurement basis

Define impact and effort units before comparing options. Confidence is a weight assigned by your team; it is not automatically a statistical confidence level.

A second independently worked case

Zero modeled impact gives score zero. Inputs: Estimated impact: 0 impact units; Confidence weight: 100 %; Comparable effort: 5 effort units. Results: Weighted impact per effort: 0 score.

Precision and output units

Displayed results: Weighted impact per effort in score, rounded to 3 decimal places. Display rounding does not establish the precision of the original measurements or estimates.

Common uses

  • Compare Confidence Adjusted Impact per Effort across scenarios under matching definitions.

How it works

Multiply your impact estimate by a confidence weight and divide by comparable positive effort. This is a user-defined scoring convention, not a validated forecast or the full RICE method.

Worked example

50 × 0.60 ÷ 10 = 3. Enter estimated impact 50 impact units, confidence weight 60 %, comparable effort 10 effort units. The independently worked result is weighted impact per effort 3 score. Compare this example with your reporting definitions before substituting your own figures.

FAQ

Is this the full RICE framework?

No. This user-defined impact/confidence/effort score has no reach input. Use it only when that scoring convention fits the comparison and the scales are consistent.

Does a confidence weight of 60% mean a 60% chance of profit?

No. The weight does not calibrate a probability or a monetary outcome. Document how the team assigns it and test how plausible alternative weights change the ranking.
