Density, mass & volume calculator
Solve for any one variable in density = mass ÷ volume. Enter the other two quantities in the stated SI units.
Result for the values shown.

What to enter
| Input | Meaning and units |
|---|---|
| Solve for | Choose the applicable option: Density (kg/m³), Mass (kg), Volume (m³). |
| Density (kg/m³) | Enter density in kg/m³; use the same basis as the other measurements. |
| Mass (kg) | Enter mass in kg; use the same basis as the other measurements. |
| Volume (m³) | Net volume in cubic metres. Convert cubic units before entering the value; outside dimensions of hollow objects are not net material volume. |
Understanding your result
Read Solved value in the units and model stated on this page. The formula density = mass ÷ volume defines the relationship; measurement accuracy and model applicability are separate from numerical precision.
Common mistakes
- Mixing input units or changing the physical meaning of a variable without changing the model.
Check your calculation
- Use the worked example as a known reference case, then change one input at a time and check the direction and units of the response.
Calculation checks, sources and review limits
How heavy is a given volume when I know its density?
Choose which quantity to solve for. Known density and volume give mass; mass and volume give density; mass and density give volume.
Common uses
- Find mass from a material’s density and volume.
- Calculate density from measured mass and volume.
How it works
Choose the unknown variable and supply the other two values. The unknown field is ignored. density = mass ÷ volume. Division by zero is not defined. These relationships assume consistent quantities and units, without additional physical effects.
Worked example
Mass = 10 and Volume = 5 gives density = 2.
