What to enter
| Input | Meaning and units |
|---|---|
| Radius | Enter the radius, which is half the diameter. |
Understanding your result
Read Volume (cubic units), Surface area (square units) in the units and model stated on this page. The formula V = 4πr³/3 · S = 4πr² defines the relationship; measurement accuracy and model applicability are separate from numerical precision.
Common mistakes
- Entering the diameter where the radius is requested.
Check your calculation
- Use the worked example as a known reference case, then change one input at a time and check the direction and units of the response.

What are the volume and surface area of a sphere?
Enter the radius to calculate the enclosed volume and outside surface area of a sphere. Use half the diameter if that is the measurement you have.
Common uses
- Calculate the space occupied by a spherical shape.
- Find the outer area of a sphere.
How it works
A sphere encloses all points within one radius of its centre. Volume scales with radius cubed; surface area scales with radius squared. Doubling the radius multiplies volume by eight and surface area by four.
Worked example
Radius 3 gives volume 36π ≈ 113.0973 and surface area 36π ≈ 113.0973 in their respective units.
